đź’ˇ From strategy to project work
- Problem Statements are a tool that can be used to help us define what we’re solving & why at a high level (strategy) or at an operational level (initiative/project)
- First, we need to set up objectives and key results — OKRI — to know what we’re trying to achieve through initiatives/project work and why.
- Then, we need to think through the work that could move the needle on our key results.
To uncover what problems we have and make hypothesis for how we’ll solve for them, we need to understand
- What’s broken?
- What do employees & the business need?
- How might we help?
That’s when we look at employee and business needs to figure out what needs to happen.

Employee needs
- Employees know their pain points, needs and motivations — ask them to understand how you can drive improvements
- Research helps uncover issues or opportunities you didn’t even know existed
- The more you understand your users’ needs, the more you’ll build projects and processes that land, and add value
To do what?
- Define your hypothesis and & your OKRI
- Inform & validate your priorities and pivots
- Design a given project & get feedback

How do we know the work to be done?
- Products enable customers to get a Job Done — and People Experience work enables employees to get a Job Done.
- DiscoveryUser research help us understand the needs, motivations and fears of our users so we can build a product that’ll get them to do that job.
1. Ask yourself
- How might we create an onboarding experience that’s clarifying, energising and timely
- So that new joiners want to stay and perform at their best?
2. Make a hypothesis
- We believe that excitement, clarity and timeliness at pre-boarding
- So if we create a 5/5 onboarding MVP
- Then we will see 0% new hires resign between offer and end of probation
And that’s because
- When an employee joins a new company,
- They want to feel clear, energised and clued up
- So they can thrive & do their best job
3. Ask your users & business
Validate your hypothesis
- with your leadership against business needs & challenges ahead
- with your users doing User research
To confirm that’s most the most effective way to reach your key result.
PS — the same thinking process applies to strategy creation, but that’s not what this toolbox is about.
